What is Medical Evacuation?

More than medical evacuation—we are MedjetAssist

Medical evacuation, also referred to as medevac, medivac or med evac, is the transfer of a patient from one hospital to another. This usually occurs because the patient is seriously ill and requires medical care only available at another hospital, or the patient becomes ill or injured while traveling and seeks to continue their care at a facility closer to home. Medical evacuation generally requires a private air ambulance and inflight medical staff.

How Much Does a Medical Evacuation Cost?

The cost of a medical evacuation is contingent on the seriousness of the patient’s condition and the distance that the patient has to travel. Domestic evacuations can range from $10,000 to $25,000, while international evacuations can cost $100,000 or more.

Why is Medical Evacuation Protection Important?

It’s always a good idea to review your health insurance coverage before making travel plans, particularly if traveling internationally or to a remote area of the country where access to healthcare is limited. Some policies do provide limited medical with high deductibles for treatment overseas. However, many do not provide coverage for a medical evacuation, even for a life-threatening situation, leaving the patient responsible for paying the high cost of an evacuation out-of-pocket.
The MedjetAssist Membership Difference

Travelers who become hospitalized while they are away often find that their freedom of choice can disappear. Even if they have travel insurance.

Most travelers needing continued care want to return to their home hospital. That gets complicated, and costly, since the medical evacuation benefit of most travel insurance policies and platinum cards only provides transport to the closest adequate hospital. In such a situation, the added benefits of an air medical transport service like MedjetAssist pays off.

If a Medjet member becomes hospitalized at all more than 150 miles from home, requires continued in-patient care and meets transport criteria, Medjet will arrange medical transport to the hospital of their choice within their home country at no additional cost and with no preexisting condition exclusions (under age 75), deductibles or claim forms. All the member pays is their membership fee. Unlike medical evacuation insurance, MedjetAssist has no monetary limit to the program’s benefits and no restrictions on the amount or type of travel taken. Medjet does not specify international medical evacuation or domestic medical evacuation. We have a global network of authorized affiliates who can go near or far to get the member home. So free yourself from fine print, from the restrictions of medical evacuation companies and travel with the proven protection of MedjetAssist.
