Getting Personal: Member Journals

Dr. Pamela McLain

Aspen, CO to Birmingham, AL

“I wanted so badly to be back at my home hospital.”

I was trying to squeeze in one last ski run before sunset. The light was fading and the wind was kicking up the snow. It was getting more and more difficult to see.

Garfield Beckstead

Zimbabwe to Fort Myers, FL

“Out of nowhere the pain gripped me.”

It was hot that day. It tends to get that way deep in the jungles of Zimbabwe. But I started feeling cold and clammy. Out of nowhere the pain gripped me and crushed down heavy on my chest.

Tony Clasen

Odessa, TX to Houston, TX

“I had a ruptured spleen and six cracked ribs.”

We were riding through Big Bend National Park. A biker’s paradise. Long stretches of road snaking out in front of us. Wild, twisted and varied vegetation.

Carolyn Rodgers

Fetiyhe, Turkey to Duncan, OK

“It was time to get home.”

On the first day of our family cruise to Turkey, we landed in the quaint port town of Dalyan for a lazy afternoon of shopping and eating. I took a walk around the docks appreciating the bobbing masts and cool breeze.

Eileen Shirk

Acapulco, Mexico to Toledo, OH

“I could have suffered permanent damage.”

One minute I was having a blast with my friends in Acapulco. The next I was lying unconscious on the side of the road after a truck hit our Jeep head-on. I woke up in a crowded emergency room.
