How MedjetHorizon Keeps Our Members Safe

By John Gobbels, CEO, Medjet

People often tell me they joined Medjet for the medical evacuation coverage — the assurance that if they end up in a hospital halfway around the world, we'll get them home to the doctors they know, a hospital they trust, and the people they love. That matters enormously, and we're proud of how we deliver on that promise.

But when I talk to members today, the conversation has shifted. What I hear more and more is this: "I'm not just worried about getting sick. I'm worried about my safety given everything that’s happening in the world."

Honestly? I understand that completely.

War in Eastern Europe. Cartel violence flaring in Puerto Vallarta. Political unrest and crime spilling into the streets of the cities and countries people traditionally considered “perfectly safe”.

The world has always been unpredictable, but the pace and proximity of crises feels different right now. Older studies have always shown that roughly 3 out of 4 travelers worried about their safety on the road. I'd wager that number is considerably higher today.

That's exactly why MedjetHorizon has been our fastest-growing membership for four consecutive years. And it broke records last month (March 2026). It's not just medical repatriation - though that's included. It's what sits on top of that: 24/7 access to a global Crisis Response Center staffed by security professionals whose sole job is to be there for you when things go wrong.

When I explain this to people, the first question is always the same:

What can they actually do?

Let me give you a few real examples of MedjetHorizon member experiences.

Real MedjetHorizon Member Stories

  • Europe has seen a significant uptick in demonstrations that have turned violent. Immigration tensions, tourist-go-home sentiment, and other local frictions have turned suddenly into scary situations. In Paris, a couple was on the Champs-Élysées when a “yellow vest” demonstration turned into a riot. The police were on one side, crowds on the other, and exit streets began to get blocked off as stores lowered their gates and locked down. The couple called in a panic, and the security response team guided them out by phone. Step by step, street by street, until they reached a hotel that had been contacted and had agreed to open up and pull them inside.
  • When cartel violence flared near Puerto Vallarta, we had members there. They were monitored in real time and instructed on safe shelter-in-place protocols. Had the situation deteriorated further, evacuation by land or air would have been an option.
  • Members trapped in the Middle East were monitored while sheltering in place, then security teams coordinated transfers to secure airfields and facilitated evacuation flights.
  • A family in Cancún found themselves directly in the path of a hurricane. They were flown to San Diego, where they could safely connect to a commercial flight home.
  • At a trade show in China, two businessmen began receiving threats and were being followed and harassed. Escorts were dispatched to meet them at the convention center, get them to their hotel to pack up, and got them securely to the airport.
  • And then there was the production crew scouting for a big concert event in South Korea while North Korea was actively threatening missile launches toward Seoul. Unnerved, they checked in with the Crisis Response Center, and every time they moved locations they checked in. As one crew member put it:“It felt good to have someone monitoring us, knowing that if things escalated, help was already in motion.”

These aren't edge cases.

They're the kinds of situations that increasingly define travel in 2026.

MedjetHorizon also covers scenarios that people rarely think about until they're facing them. If a member simply goes dark — no contact, no word — there's a team that knows what to do and who to call. That’s not something most people have planned for, and it’s something your family will be grateful to have. Wrongful detention, terrorism, pandemic, extortion and blackmail, or if you’re the victim of a violent crime…you can also call for assistance.

We're in the business of providing confidence

The world is complicated, and you should still travel — travel is still one of the most meaningful things a person can do. But you should travel knowing that if a situation around you deteriorated you would have someone to call. There'd be a highly trained, experienced security team with global reach that’d already thinking about how to get you somewhere safe.

That's what MedjetHorizon is built for. And that's what keeps me proud of what we do every day.

Important to Note:

It’s important to note that each and every response depends entirely on the specific threat, what is safest for the individual member at that moment, and government restrictions.

As a general description, possible responses may include:

  • Real-time risk assessment, crisis consultation and safety guidance
  • Structured shelter-in-place monitoring when movement is not advisable
  • Continued monitoring of conditions and consultation on next steps
  • Relocation to a safer area if feasible
  • Coordination of secure movement or support services

Factors that may impact response include:

  • The nature of the security threat
  • How directly the member is impacted*
(*The case of a directly impacted member will likely be handled differently than that of a member who is not directly impacted)
  • Current conditions and government restrictions**
(**No organization can circumvent government-imposed restrictions)
